Sign of a Good Chinese Drywall Remediation Contractor

A good Chinese drywall remediation contractor will go to great lengths to ensure that your home is protected during the lengthy remediation process.  Despite the considerable time and cautious effort it can take, the first phase of any Chinese drywall remediation should be spent protecting and prepping the home for the remediation process. It’s incumbent upon your contractor to protect the items that will stay in place during the process – such as wood or tile floors, stairs, and depending on the individual home,  showers, tubs and kitchen islands. It’s also imperative that your remediation contractor takes the time to carefully remove and protect items that will go into storage during the process, such as cabinets, countertops, doors, window treatments, and window shutters. Last but not least, your contractor should ensure that the exterior of your home is also protected during the remediation process.  This includes protecting the exterior steps, sidewalks and driveway from damage.

CBHB Chinese Drywall Remediation Protection Systems

We thought it might be helpful to share photos of some of the protection systems we will be using on a 4000 square foot Chinese Drywall remediation job that is currently underway in Hillsborough county.

In this post, we’ll show you the floor protection systems we use to protect the flooring and the thresholds of doorways. In following posts, we’ll discuss protection systems for interior and exterior stairs, cabinets, countertops, tubs, showers, etc.

The first set of photos below show what we did to protect the the metal thresholds and surrounding stone located in two of the main doorways of this home in Tampa.

We first covered the thresholds with a double layer of protective tape, followed by a custom-built wood platform. This keeps the heavy foot traffic up and off of the threshold, which can be easily dented, scratched or damaged. The surrounding areas are protected with a layered system of visqueen, masonite, OSB, carpet padding, and carpet.

We built custom protection systems like these for each doorway in the home – even including the ones in the garage. At the end of every day, the wood protection has to be taken up in order to close the doors and lock the home up for the night.  Then, first thing each morning when we come in, we replace the protective wood barrier and get started on our work.

On every Chinese drywall remediation project, we build custom protection systems like these for each doorway in the home – including the ones in the garage!

At the end of every day, the wood protection has to be taken up in order to close the doors. Then, first thing each morning, we replace the protective wood barrier.

To protect all of the hard-surfaced floors (wood, tile, marble) from damage and/or dust, we use another multi-layered system.

We begin with a layer of Visqueen, followed by a layer of masonite, topped by an additional layer of Visqueen. The seams on each layer are thoroughly taped to ensure that no Chinese drywall dust or debris gets through to the flooring surface during the demolition process.

In our next post, we will go over the system we used to protect both the interior and exterior stairs on this home.
